Sonnet 55

In this sonnet, the speaker claims to have the power to keep the young man’s memory alive eternally. It is similar to sonnet 18 in that the speaker talks about keeping the young man’s memory alive forever. The speaker says the young man will outlive the crumbling, blackened monuments and statues. Again, time is personified when the speaker calls it “sluttish”, or filthy and untidy.
